How wealthy buyers are scoping out second homes in a slow market

Developers are using pricey short-term visits to lure buyers into a purchase

At the Montage Kapalua development in Maui, prospective buyers can arrange four-night stays — complete with private dinners and spa treatments — before deciding to take the plunge on a million-dollar (or more) house.

Amid the market slowdown, these trial runs are becoming more common among those shopping for a second home — or a site to build their dream abode, Bloomberg reported. Sellers are hoping the lavish sojourns will convince buyers to stay for good.

“For this crowd, time is precious,” Tina Necrason, vice president for residential at the hotel management company Montage International, told Bloomberg. “We feel that if they can make this commitment of time, they are serious about buying.”

Jeff Heilbrun — director of sales at the Snake River Sporting Club in Jackson, Wyoming — said about about 20 percent of the buyers stayed before they bought homes or homesites. Prices in the development range from $800,000 to $3.25 million.

Before the housing crisis, wealthy buyers often bought second homes sight unseen, the report said. But now, as they have more choices and have started to think of resort homes as long-term investments for their families, prospective buyers are taking their time.

But, given sellers’ targeted buyer pool of high-net-worth individuals, the short stays can cost potential buyers thousands.

The Montage program, for example, charges between $500 to $2,000 per night, while a “guest visit” at Timbers Resorts’ Kiawah Island in South Carolina costs $1,200 a night. Sales teams said they charge hefty fees to ensure prospects are legitimate.

“If you don’t charge anything and you don’t vet, you get what we call ‘speeders’—since they speed right past the sales gallery,” said Greg Spencer, CEO of Timbers. [Bloomberg] — Meenal Vamburkar

Ryan Spooner signs in Switzerland with HC Lugano

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Earlier today, word broke on Twitter that former Oiler, Ryan Spooner, had a signed a contract in the Swiss league with HC Lugano and I couldn’t help but laugh at the news… and maybe cry a little bit.

If you want another reminder of how bad Peter Chiarelli was at his job then look no further than the way the Ryan Spooner trade worked out for the Edmonton Oilers. After starting the 2018-19 season in a scoring drought that wouldn’t last, Ryan Strome was shipped off to New York with ol’ Cuddles coming back our way as a means to kickstart the offence, gain some team speed, and get the boys back on track. Instead, what actually happened was that Spooner was infinitely worse than Strome ever was and ended up finishing his time with the franchise down in Bakersfield before eventually being moved to Vancouver. Needless to say, the Ryan Spooner experiment was a horrible one.

Fast forward to today and the Oilers are still looking for a third line centre to play behind McDraiNuge, which would have been a perfect slot for Ryan Strome. Rather than having that guy already on the roster, Ken Holland is forced to dig through the bargain bin to try and find someone capable of anything other than being useless. And yeah, you can certainly say that the emotional lift of bringing Sam Gagner back to Edmonton in exchange for Spooner was a nice little light at the end of the dark tunnel that was the 2018-29 season, but I don’t know how much Samwise can reasonably be expected to help the team win more games come October. Obviously, I hope I’m wrong but I’d rather have Ryan Strome right now, wouldn’t you? *sigh* Thanks, Pete.

After being drafted 45th overall by the Boston Bruins back in 2010, Spooner amassed 48 goals and 119 assists in 325 regular season games with four NHL franchises.

Ellen DeGeneres buys and sells in Montecito and Carpinteria (again)

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

We don’t know anyone who moves more frequently than Ellen DeGeneres. The TV talk show hostess’s property portfolio is so constantly in flux that her business manager and realtors alike must have mansion-laced nightmares about the dozens of transactions she’s initiated over the past few years. (Still, the hefty fees they’ve reaped from her perpetual itchy-footedness should take the sting outta those morning hangovers).

In the past year alone, according to Yolanda’s count, Ms. DeGeneres has bought and/or sold no fewer than seven different homes, each of them worth more than most folks earn in their entire lives. Hardly a week goes by when the lady ain’t makin’ the property columns, and bedraggled journalists can barely keep up with her address changes. So despite her bonafide celebrity status, it’s little wonder that a couple of her recent purchases slipped through the proverbial cracks. Until now, natch.

Perennially on the move

While surfing through the tony Montecito real estate market, we discovered that Ms. DeGeneres (and her longtime wife, actress Portia de Rossi) very quietly paid $5,900,000 last July (2017) for a historic Montecito estate. She/they gave the place a thorough redo and flipped it back up for sale just four months later. The property would eventually transfer in February (2018) for the full $6.3 million asking price. All this without a peep from anyone in the online property observation columns (including Yolanda)! We’ll chat further about that transaction in a minute or two.

But wait, there’s more. This past August (2018), Ms. DeGeneres stealthily slammed down another $6,700,000 for a ranch property located in the foothills above Carpinteria (CA), the small seaside town located just southeast of Montecito. The sale went down totally off-market, so unfortunately we don’t have any pics to share, but we dug up a few pertinent details about the pastoral estate. Keeping up?

The 10+ acre lot, which sports stunning views of the mountains and ocean, is completely fenced-in for privacy and security. There are two separate structures on the land — one a small remodeled farmhouse, and the other an original-condition two-story barn — both built approximately 100 years ago, circa World War I. Also on the premises are a pool and spa. Most important, however, is the sprawling (fenced) pasture, which was likely the main draw for these gals (Ms. de Rossi is a noted equestrian).

Ellen & Portia’s new $6.7 million Carpinteria ranch

The estate was last owned by a local real estate investor who bought the land for just $3.3 million last year (2017) and doubled his money after flipping it to Ms. DeGeneres. Though wonderfully secluded, it’s less than a 10-minute drive from the $18.6 million Carpinteria oceanfront mansion that Ms. DeGeneres bought last year. Imagine that! How convenient for those times when y’all need a quick weekend getaway, but your favorite private jet is already chartered.

Now, about the Montecito pad that Ms. DeGeneres quietly bought and sold a few months back. Located near the proverbial heart of the village (it’s basically just around the corner from Oprah’s 66-acre Promised Land estate) the petite property is mostly hidden from the road out front by tall hedges and trees. Originally built in 1930, the Spanish/Mediterranean-style confection has just 2,696-square-feet of living space, modest by celebrity standards.

Iron gates swing inwards, allowing luxury vehicles access to the crunchy gravel driveway and two-car garage ’round back. The interiors here were thoroughly renovated by Ms. DeGeneres and include a surprisingly large living room with a vaulted ceiling and imposing stone fireplace.

There’s a breakfast nook with two sets of French doors and an adjacent kitchen with high-end appliances. All three bathrooms include vaulted ceilings, and the home’s 3.5 bathrooms include stone floors and expensive fittings. Fancy toilets and all that, you know.

Accessed through the master bedroom is what the listing refers to as a “sun porch”. From there are some nice views of the lush surrounding flora, if that’s the sort of thing y’all go in for.

Outside, the home’s exquisitely manicured grounds include formal lawns, gardens, neatly clipped hedges, mature trees, and pebble walkways. An outdoor dining area, a lily pond (filled with live koi fish), and a dark-bottomed swimming pool complete the 1-acre lot. Oh, and as for the lucky new owner, she is a lady from Chicago named Donna Lyon. (Our Mrs. Lyon is the widow of financier Robert Lyon, and she additionally owns a Manhattan townhouse, a Florida mansion, and one of Chicago’s most expensive homes. But we digress).

Though this could (and probably will) change at a moment’s notice, Ms. DeGeneres’s current property portfolio includes a $15 million mid-century modern residence in Beverly Hills and the two Carpinteria casas we have already mentioned.

But should we win the upcoming Powerball jackpot, we’d wager mega millions that all three of those homes will be long gone by this time next year. C’mon, you know they will.

Listing agent (Carpinteria farm): Jason Siemens, Sotheby’s International Realty
Selling agent (Montecito): Randy Solakian, Coldwell Banker

Connor McDavid: 2018-19 Season in Review

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

With another disappointing Oilers season in the rear-view mirror, Oilers fans try to keep their heads up and look towards a brighter future. Without a doubt, no matter how bleak it may seem, the Oilers still boast one of the greatest players in the world on their roster, so the dim light of optimism can never truly be smothered.

But how many more ways are there to quantify the supremacy of Connor McDavid? Though a disappointing season as a team, with the Oilers missing the playoffs for the 12th time in thirteen seasons, McDavid continued his domination of the NHL in his fourth full campaign, tying his career high in goals (41) and setting a new career high in points (116), earning his second Hart Trophy nomination and the opportunity to earn his third consecutive Ted Lindsay Award (recognized as the best player in the league by his peers).

Though the 2018-19 NHL season was the Year of Nikita Kucherov, with the Lightning superstar dominating the league in most statistical categories, McDavid kept pace as well as he could, without playing on a historical mighty team that were the ’18-’19 Lightning.

McDavid’s 81 total even-strength points were actually ahead of Kucherov’s 80, while also finishing 3rd overall in 5v5 points with 64 (Kucherov was first with 69, and the Blackhawks’ Patrick Kane second with 66). McDavid also finished 4th in primary assists with 28, just ahead of Kucherov’s 26 (both finished behind the Maple Leafs’ Mitch Marner with 36, the Penguin’s Sidney Crosby with 31, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ Artemi Panarin with 29).

Individually, McDavid had another sterling season, nearly keeping pace with Kucherov while the former’s team struggled through a season of turmoil and the latter’s nearly set historical records. Because of the standard that players don’t win unless their team makes the playoffs (even though both Kucherov and Crosby earned only four extra games each), McDavid will likely be denied a second Hart trophy, but a nomination alone shows the respect that the Oilers captain had earned around the league as one of the very best.

So how did McDavid’s incredible season translate to his teammates? Here’s a look at how McDavid performed with some of his regular linemates. (all numbers are at even-strength)

w/ Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Even-Strength TOI 351.46

CF% 49.29 GF% 45.71 SCF% 48.33 HDCF% 48.34 HDGF% 38.10 Off.Zone FO% 53.81 SH% 8.00

McDavid and RNH didn’t actually play as well together as some may have thought with Nuge on Connor’s wing. They didn’t push the the pace in a positive factor, with a relatively low shooting conversion and not generating enough offensive opportunities to sustain a potent offense.

w/ Leon Draisaitl

Even Strength TOI 821.15

CF% 51.01 GF% 57.14 SCF% 51.29 HDCF% 47.58 HDGF% 54.84 Off.Zone FO% 57.22 SH% 14.41

With no surprise to anyone, Connor and Leon played the most together, and dominated while they were together, controlling the play and vastly outscoring the opposition when together. They allowed more High Danger chances (though that could be attributed to the instability on the blueline behind them), but converted more efficiently on them than opponents.

So how did Draisaitl and McDavid fair with the cast of players who rode shotgun on their right-wing?

w/ Leon and Zack Kassian

Even Strength TOI 290.25

CF% 51.13 GF% 55.10 SCF% 51.03 HDCF% 44.78 HDGF% 62.50 Off.Zone FO% 60.83 SH% 17.09

Without a doubt, the most successful lineman to play with Connor and Leon. Kassian’s speed has allowed him to keep up and generate a greater amount of chances towards the opponent’s net. The most impressive stat to me is the conversion of High Danger chances, even though the Oilers were grossly out-chanced against.

w/ Leon and Ty Rattie

Even Strength TOI 73:52

CF% 45.95 GF% 44.44 SCF% 49.32 HDCF% 38.89 HDGF% 42.86 Off.Zone FO% 54.35 SH% 10.00

2018-19 was hoped to be the Year of the Ratt by many Oilers fans after finishing the ’17-’18 season strong on the top line, but injuries robbed Rattie of his place on the top line, but even in the small amount of time he saw back there was not incredibly productive (or at least as much as many hoped).

w/ Leon and Drake Caggulia

Even Strength TOI 77.19

CF% 57.82 GF% 50.00 SCF% 62.67 HDCF% 60.61 HDGF% 50.00 Off.Zone FO% 59.68 SH% 12.50

Though he’s long-gone, shipped off to the Blackhawks for (potential buy-out candidate?) Brandon Manning, it’s interesting to see how The Drake played on the top line when he was healthy. It actually be more frustrating to see how well the three played in their short-time together. Again, small sample size, but it’s quite remarkable to see the stark difference from Rattie to Caggulia on the top line with relatively the same amount of even-strength time.

Heading into next season, it seems that the most sensible play would be to keep the Draisaitl-McDavid-Kassian trio together to see if they can continue to play well together. But with a new coach, a new system, and potentially some new players coming in either through free agency or the farm, this all might be irrelevant come the fall. But the chemistry between Connor and Leon is undeniable, and despite the instance by some that Draisaitl needs to run is own line in order to realize his full potential (both in terms of talent and salary cap potential), but there’s no reason to break up a duo how can combine for over 200 points and nearly a hundred goals.

And when the Oilers make the 2019-20 playoffs, McDavid will capture the Hart Trophy again.

Mixed-Use Development Proposed Near Olympic & San Vicente

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Three small commercial buildings near the intersection of Olympic and San Vicente Boulevards could make way for a mixed-use development, according to plans filed last week with the City of Los Angeles.

The proposed development, which would rise from a quarter-acre property at 6001-6011 W. Olympic Boulevard, calls for the construction of a six-story edifice which would feature 57 residential units and 1,600 square feet of ground-floor retail space.  The project's case filing does not offer any additional information.

Property records list the owner of 6001-6011 Olympic as an entity called Ogden Garden, LP, an affiliate of West Los Angeles developers Wiseman Residential.

The project site is located just east of the so-called Fairfax "asterisk," where Olympic and San Vicente intersect with Fairfax Avenue.   A five-story, 144-unit development known as VINZ was completed at the asterisk last year.

Plans were recently filed for a six-story, 46-unit apartment building a few blocks away at 5891 Olympic Boulevard.

Wiseman is one of the more prolific developers of rental housing in the City of Los Angeles, with developments on the horizon in Carthay, Hollywood, and many other neighborhoods.

NBA roundup: Nets stun Raptors with overtime win

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Jarrett Allen hit the go-ahead layup with 64 seconds left in overtime, and the Brooklyn Nets outlasted the Toronto Raptors for a 106-105 victory Friday night in New York, ending a pair of eight-game losing streaks.

Allen helped the Nets end an eight-game home losing streak and an eight-game overall skid when he converted a reverse layup after getting the pass from Spencer Dinwiddie.

The Nets then exhaled as Kyle Lowry missed a left-wing 3-point attempt with 49 seconds left and Fred VanVleet missed a 3-point shot right before the final buzzer.

D'Angelo Russell led the Nets with 29 points and hit three jumpers in overtime after sitting down the stretch in the fourth quarter. Kawhi Leonard led all scorers with 32 points and blocked Dinwiddie's layup with one second left in the fourth quarter to ensure overtime.

Spurs 133, Lakers 120

DeMar DeRozan recorded 36 points, nine assists and eight rebounds to lead San Antonio to a victory over visiting Los Angeles. LaMarcus Aldridge and Jakob Poeltl each had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Spurs, who avenged a Wednesday loss to the Lakers in L.A.

Patty Mills also scored 14 points for San Antonio, and Davis Bertans added 13. Bryn Forbes and Marco Belinelli contributed 11 points apiece and Rudy Gay added 10 for San Antonio, which outscored Los Angeles 44-21 in the fourth quarter.

LeBron James had 35 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds, and Kyle Kuzma added 27 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who had a four-game winning streak halted. Lonzo Ball registered 13 points and 11 assists.

Warriors 105, Bucks 95

Golden State earned a measure of revenge against host Milwaukee, reversing an earlier blowout loss. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson shared game-high scoring honors for the Warriors with 20 points apiece, each hitting four 3-pointers.

Kevin Durant was held to 11 points on 3-for-14 shooting, so the Warriors turned to their depth to complete a 3-2 trip with a third straight win. Jonas Jerebko, Andre Iguodala and Alfonzo McKinnie combined for 10 3-pointers as the Warriors drained 19 from beyond the arc and outscored the Bucks 57-21 on threes.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had 22 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for the Bucks, who won 134-111 at Golden State last month.

Bulls 114, Thunder 112

Lauri Markkanen scored 24 points, including a tiebreaking layup with 4.9 seconds remaining, to lift host Chicago over Oklahoma City despite another triple-double from the Thunder's Russell Westbrook.

Zach LaVine finished with a team-high 25 points for the Bulls, and Justin Holiday contributed 20. Chicago snapped a seven-game losing streak and gave Jim Boylen his first win as a head coach four days after he replaced Fred Hoiberg.

Westbrook had 24 points, 17 rebounds and 13 assists in 35 minutes. He also committed 10 turnovers. Westbrook posted his second triple-double in a row, his fifth of the season and the 109th of his career.

76ers 117, Pistons 111

Jimmy Butler poured in 38 points for the second consecutive game, and Philadelphia overcame the absence of All-Star center Joel Embiid to rally past host Detroit.

The Sixers' Ben Simmons piled up 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists while JJ Redick had 18 points and five assists. Embiid was rested by Philadelphia coach Brett Brown after a lethargic performance Wednesday in a loss at Toronto.

Blake Griffin racked up 31 points, 12 rebounds and six assists to lead Detroit, which has lost three straight. Andre Drummond contributed 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Kings 129, Cavaliers 110

De'Aaron Fox missed his career high by one point, pouring in 30 points as Sacramento rolled to a win at Cleveland.

Buddy Hield complemented his backcourt mate with 25 points for the Kings, who won their third straight, their second in a row to start a four-game trip.

Jordan Clarkson had 26 points and rookie Collin Sexton 23 for the Cavaliers, who played without George Hill, who was held out as final details were being worked out on a trade to Milwaukee.

Hornets 113, Nuggets 107

Kemba Walker scored 21 points and hit four free throws in the final 15 seconds as Charlotte snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory over Denver.

The Hornets exploded for a 40-point second quarter and led by as many as 16 in the first half, then pulled away in the fourth quarter after the Nuggets got as close as one point late in the third period.

Story continues

In the process, the Hornets snapped the Nuggets' seven-game winning streak.

Grizzlies 107, Pelicans 103

JaMychal Green scored a team-high 24 points to lead a strong bench effort for visiting Memphis to a win at New Orleans. Kyle Anderson added 19 points and 11 rebounds, Marc Gasol scored 15 and Joakim Noah came off the bench to contribute 13 for the Grizzlies.

Memphis' reserves outscored their Pelicans counterparts 53-11.

Julius Randle led the Pelicans with 26 points and 13 rebounds, but he missed two important free throws late as New Orleans scored its last field goal with 5:18 remaining. Anthony Davis added 25 points and 11 rebounds, Jrue Holiday had 20 points and 11 assists, and Solomon Hill scored a season-high 14 for the Pelicans.

Heat 115, Suns 98

Fill-in starter Bam Adebayo scored 20 of his game-high 22 points in the first half and added 10 rebounds, leading Miami over host Phoenix.

Miami reserve Justise Winslow added 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-4 on 3-point attempts. Winslow also grabbed eight rebounds and handed out six assists.

Phoenix's De'Anthony Melton, a 20-year-old rookie and a 2018 second-round pick, made his first career start, posting 12 points and four assists. The Suns started two other rookies: center Deandre Ayton (16 points) and Mikal Bridges (12).

Pacers 112, Magic 90

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 26 points, and visiting Indiana cruised to an easy win over Orlando. Cory Joseph scored 15 points off the bench, and Thaddeus Young added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Pacers.

The win was Indiana's eighth straight against Orlando and the 15th in the past 16 meetings.

Nikola Vucevic had 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Aaron Gordon added 20 points and 14 rebounds for Orlando. The Magic have lost four of their past six games.

Beckhams take full control of brand business: report

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Ex-England international footballer David Beckham and his fashion-designer wife Victoria have taken full control of his brand company after snapping up shares they did not already own, The Financial Times said Friday.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the business daily reported that David and former Spice Girls member Victoria paid $50 million for a 33-percent stake held by XIX Entertainment, owned by the band's ex-manager Simon Fuller.

Beckham Brand Company, which manages the former Manchester United star's partnerships and brands, has a stake in new US Major League Soccer franchise Inter Miami.

Friday's report comes one day after David was handed a six-month disqualification from driving in Britain after using a phone while behind the wheel. (AFP)

The 6-10th overall picks from the 2013 NHL Draft

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

With the Oilers picking in the 8-hole on Friday night at NHL Draft, I thought it would be interesting to take a trip down memory lane and look at the players selected between 6-10 in past draft years to see if we can learn any lessons about what type of players gets picked around that slot. Today, our series takes us back to the 2013 NHL Draft.

For today’s countdown, I decided to change things up a little bit by going back to 2013 instead of continuing on with the 2017 draft class. As I was looking at the players chosen in 2017, I figured that there weren’t many that are actually up and running in their NHL careers quite yet so it made more sense to step back in time. To me, it didn’t make a lot of sense to look at kids that haven’t had the time to work their way to the NHL and use them as potential comparables for what might happen with the Oilers. With that in mind, I decided to take a journey back to 2013 to see how the players taken in our range have progressed in the six years since draft day.

#6 – Sean Monahan – C – Calgary Flames

Rookie Season (2013-14) – 75GP: 22G, 12A = 34 points
2018-19 Season w/ Calgary – 78GP: 34G, 48A = 82 points

Pre-Draft Scouting Report:

Sean Monahan is the top-ranked OHL forward for the upcoming 2013 NHL Entry Draft and it is for good reason as he brings the complete package of size, skill and hockey intelligence that teams search for in franchise players. Projected to be a top-5 pick in June, Monahan is off to a strong start (7 points through 4 games) in his draft year. He is a smooth skating big-bodied forward that has a real knack for finding open areas. Monahan excels in puck possession and can unload his hard accurate shot at the drop of a dime. He’s a responsible player on both sides of the puck and will be counted upon in all situations as he is mature beyond his years. While some draft prospects will fade and dwindle, Monahan’s consistency and complete game should keep him in discussion for a top-5 selection all season long.

I remember Sean Monahan being a guy that was linked to the Oilers a lot that spring, and I remember hating the fact that the Flames were able to grab him one spot ahead of us. As we’ve seen in the years that followed, Monahan has developed into a very consistent scorer for the Flames and it’s endlessly annoying to anyone that cheers for the team up the road.

#7 – Darnell Nurse – D – Edmonton Oilers

Rookie Season (2015-16) – 69GP: 3G, 7A = 10 points
2018-19 Season w/ Edmonton – 82GP: 10G, 31A = 41 points

Pre-Draft Scouting Report:

Nurse has great size at six-foot-four and 185 pounds with great mobility. His offensive game really took off in his second season, improving from his 10-point rookie season to 41 points as a sophomore. Nurse’s confidence grew in his ability to rush the puck up ice, though despite the numbers, he’s not a natural point producer. He plays a sound, calculated defensive game thanks to his long wingspan and competitiveness. Nurse should develop into a stud shutdown defender.

As we know about defencemen, it can take some time for these guys to really hit their stride and that’s what we saw with Darnell Nurse in 2018-19. In 82 games played with the Oilers last season, Nurse set a career-high in goals, assists, and points while averaging 23:49 in all situations, making him one of the most heavily used blueliners on the roster. Considering the need the Oilers have for defencemen that can actually play and put up points, I think we can say for all of us that we have to hope Darnell Nurse keeps progressing in the direction he has.

#8 – Rasmus Ristolainen – D – Buffalo Sabres

Rookie Season (2013-14) – 34GP – 2G, 2A = 4 points
2018-19 Season w/ Buffalo – 78GP: 5G, 38A = 43 points

Pre-Draft Scouting Report:

One of the best defensemen of his age group, Ristolainen was a top-prospect for the 2013 NHL Draft. He is a calm player with good two-way ability and a mature style of play, though his defensive awareness and positioning still need work. More mobile and offensive than Buffalo’s other 2013 1st round pick Nikita Zadorov, Ristolainen moves the puck with confidence, has a good shot from the point and has displayed ability to work the powerplay in SM-liiga. Ristolainen has an NHL-ready frame and has gained a lot of strength while playing in SM-liiga and though he is not a big-time hitter, he feels comfortable playing the body and likes to get physical in front of the net.

Rasmus Ristolainen is an interesting defenceman at this stage in his career. This past season, he put up 43 points for the Sabres while logging big minutes (24:38) but, at the same time, he also posted a -41 +/- which landed him in dead last in the NHL. So I guess my question is, how much does a team value points when the guy putting them up can’t seem to defend all that well?

#9 – Bo Horvat – C – Vancouver Canucks

Rookie Season (2014-15) – 68GP: 13G, 12A = 25 points
2018-19 Season w/ Vancouver – 82GP: 27G, 34A = 61 points

Pre-Draft Scouting Report:

A complete two-way center who excels in his own end; first and foremost he is a competitor. Horvat always plays like there are 5 seconds left, and doesn’t take a shift off. He plays to win, not for himself, but for the team. He is dependable in any situation and is exceptional in the face-off circle. Can finish chances as well as create them.

In each of his five seasons with the Canucks, Bo Horvat has increased his points totals year over year and only seems to be getting better. As an Oilers fan, it’s annoying to see two players on the 2013 list progressing as they have, but, I guess, that’s what we have to hope for with the Oilers picking in the 8th slot this season. I guess what I’m saying is that the Oilers will have done very well if they can walk away from the weekend with a guy like Bo Horvat added to their depth chart.

#10 – Valeri Nichushkin – RW – Dallas Stars

Rookie Season (2013-14) – 79GP: 14G, 20A = 34 points
2018-19 Season w/ Dallas – 57GP: 0G, 10A = 10 points

Pre-Draft Scouting Report:

Moving his way up the draft boards is rangy pivot Valeri Nichushkin after an impressive showing for Russia at the 2013 WJHC. Nichushkin’s overtime goal in the bronze medal game sent Canada home without a medal for the first time in 14 years. Easily the top-ranked Russian forward in this draft class, Nichushkin has climbed his way up the ranks by impressing with the use of his sizeable frame, coveted net drive game and dangerous shooting arsenal. Nichushkin is a player with tons of raw offensive potential and this ranking reflects that. Whether or not the Russian factor comes into play at the draft, Nichushkin has top-10 skills.

I remember being jealous of the Stars after Nichushkin’s rookie season and wondering if the Oilers might have been better served to take him instead of Darnell Nurse. Man, how bad of a take was that? After putting up 34 points in his rookie season, Nichushkin hasn’t come close to matching that total again in the six five years since. To make matters worse, he actually disappeared to the KHL for a couple of seasons before returning to Dallas in 2018-19 for a brutal, goalless campaign. So what’s the lesson here? Sometimes it takes a little bit of patience before you can really see what you’ve got in a guy.

I’m happy I decided to look back at the 2013 draft rather than continuing on with the 2017 class. With four/five/six years under their belts, these guys are basically the players they will be for the teams that chose them if not very close. Outside of Valeri Nichushkin, the other four players have firmly established themselves as NHL players and that gives me hope that we’ll get a similar result with whoever the Oilers pick tomorrow night. To put it another way, I think most Oilers fans would be reasonably happy to have any of the first four players on our countdown on the roster and it shows the type of quality that can be available in this middle range. Point being, the Oilers are going to get a good player.
